Peter Smyth is an Irish contemporary artist living and working in North Kildare. Following the completion of his postgraduate studies, Smyth established a dedicated home studio in 2021 to transition fully into a full-time painting practice.
His career gained rapid momentum following early institutional support from renowned Irish artist Maser, leading to a landmark debut solo exhibition at Atelier Now in 2022. Operating within a tight-knit yet fiercely ambitious generation of Dublin-based contemporary painters, Smyth's work has been widely exhibited across prominent domestic platforms, including the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA Gallery), alongside emerging international projects.
Practice
Where ecological systems meet digital simulation.
Smyth's contemporary practice intersects at the volatile boundary where ecological systems meet digital simulation. His work explores the complex, hidden architectures of the natural world — specifically fungal networks, botanical anatomy, and underground root ecosystems — reinterpreting them through the clinical lens of modern software.
The creative process begins digitally: deconstructing organic imagery of plant life, petals, and stems into fragmented, rudimentary shapes, which are then translated into 3D models. Within a digital rendering environment, Smyth artificially manipulates light, texture, and highly incongruous colour schemes, creating complex geometric compositions that could never be fully envisioned from the start.
The final, crucial stage is a direct confrontation with the canvas. By translating these clinical, software-generated renderings into physical paintings, he introduces weight, tactile relief, and the deliberate, unrepeatable traces of the human hand — transforming abstract ecological data into a deeply physical, spatial experience.
Series
Arborisms
A central pillar of Smyth's practice is his ongoing series of Arborisms — a term coined by the artist to describe his structured canvas arrangements as a form of visual gardening or structural curation. These works serve as a modern votive offering to the infinite complexity of the natural forces passing silently around us, bridging the gap between raw canvas texture and hyper-modern digital aesthetics.
