A Note from the Curator

The first time I saw Yasuto Sasada's work, I wasn't thinking about the concept.

I was staring at the detail.

The longer I looked, the crazier it became.

Everywhere you look, there is another drawing, another story, another tiny decision. Most artists would stop halfway. Yasuto keeps going.

What fascinates me most is that much of his practice grew from something incredibly simple: a ballpoint pen.

Over time, he became interested in the life of the pen itself. A new pen creates a strong line. As it wears down, the line changes. Eventually it runs out completely. Instead of seeing that as a limitation, he began thinking about the pen almost as a living thing. Something that ages. Something that has given everything it has.

That idea continues throughout his work.

When you stand in front of a Yasuto painting, you begin to realize how much patience is involved. The drawings are only one part of the process. Layers of masking, airbrush, paint, linework, and color are built up gradually over time. Every section is considered. Every edge is intentional.

The process reminds me less of painting and more of fine jewelry making.

There is an incredible level of precision, discipline, and care behind every decision. Nothing feels rushed. Nothing feels accidental.

His works are playful from across the room, but up close they reveal an almost obsessive level of craftsmanship. Thousands of marks. Countless layers. Hours that most people will never fully appreciate.

Perhaps that is what keeps drawing me back.

Not because the work demands attention, but because it rewards it.

The more time you spend with it, the more it reveals.
